The New York artist Daniel Lopatin isn’t much of a rock star. Instead of rubbing shoulders with the industry elite, Lopatin spends his days writing and making music or dusting off his collection of antique synthesizers. Or colliding musically disparate worlds, such as NYC noise rock and old-school European electronica, just to see what happens. Oneohtrix Point Never is proof that such experiments can give excellent results. Listen to the artist’s latest release, Returnal, and find out for yourself — or better yet, come and hear how Lopatin’s sonic nebulae sound live. Who cares if “hypnagogic pop” is just a made-up genre?
