OFF Festival Katowice 2011: Beauty and the Beast
We’re proud to announce new additions to the OFF Festival Katowice 2011 lineup: get ready to be mezmerized by Anna Calvi’s dark hymns and witness Baaba Kulka juggle three sixes. Don’t even think of showing up at the Radio 3 tent without an exorcist!
Anna Calvi
Anna was nominated to the BBC’s prestigious Sound of 2011 last December and launched her eponymous debut record just a month later. The album was hailed as the “first great record of 2011” by NME. The music press describes the beautiful and talented Calvi as a threat to the reign of PJ Harvey, while such famous names as Nick Cave and Karl Lagerfeld have showered her with praise. Calvi describes herself as a mere storyteller — like her favorite directors Wong Kar-Wai and David Lynch. Her stories just happen to involve music.
Baaba Kulka
Baaba Kulka features Gaba Kulka on vocals (or is it Bruce Dickinson? It’s not Paul DiAnno, and definitely not Blaze Bayley), accompanied by Tomasz Duda (or is it Adrian Smith?), Bartosz Weber (who once wanted to be Adrian Smith, but has since settled for Dave Murray), Piotr Zabrodzki (who hasn’t heard of Steve Harris, but Macio has the drums covered), Macio Moretti (a.k.a. Nicko McBrain, for many reasons, but also Clive Burr, because he likes Kiss). So we have Gaba — the most versatile and bold female voice on the Polish alternative scene — and Baaba — a band that’ll play anything as long as it’s interesting and against the grain. They’ve come together to celebrate three otherworldly forces: metal, Satan, and soccer. See them at the OFF Festival — it may be your last chance (and not just because the end is near…)
