Konono No. 1 (CD)
They’re actually called L’orchestre folklorique T.P. Konono Nº1 de Mingiedi and can boast collaborations with Björk and Herbie Hancock (the group won a Grammy for their performance with the latter). The story of the band is said to go as far back as the 60s, but their earliest preserved recordings come from 1978. It wasn’t until the mid–2000s, however, that the West took notice of this Kinshasa collective, who perform original variations of the ritual sounds of Congo using instruments of their own making.
